Hays, KS--The 321A State wrestling tournament took place last Thursday and Friday, and while neither Lincoln wrestler was able to medal, both represented our community and school well.
Sophomore 285# Fritz Berger went 0-2 in the tournament to finish with a season record of 9-9. His first round match up was the defending and eventual state champion from Scott City. Following this loss on Thursday morning, Fritz battled the Hillsboro 285# to a 4-2 loss. The future is bright for this second year wrestler who improved every week during the season.
152# Senior Sean Ussrey went 1-2 to finish the season with a 24-6 record. In the first round he lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Goodland wrestler. Later that night hew picked up a huge win in another overtime match against the Doniphan West wrestler. Early Friday morning Sean's wrestling career came to an unfortunate end against a wrestler from Lyons. This was the third time that the two had met this season with Sean dropping all three contests. Sean's two losses both came to state placers, and actually they wrestled each other for 5th place with the Lyons wrestler coming out on top.
Prior to the championship finals, there was an awards ceremony and Coach Nate Naasz was awarded the 321A State Coach of the Year Award presented by the Kansas Wrestling Officials Association.
