GARY MAYABB—STALEY HS, KANSAS CITY, MO
A 4-time USA Wrestling All-American at the University of Central
Missouri and 4-time Olympic Trials Finals Qualifier, Gary Mayabb
graduated in 1985 and began his teaching & coaching career at
East High School in Excelsior Springs, MO as an assistant wrestling.
Coach Mayabb began his head coaching at Belton High School
before moving to Oak Park High School in Kansas City, MO. At
Oak Park his teams won 6 MSHSAA State Wrestling Championship
titles. In Coach Mayabb’s 26 years of coaching he has a 151-54-
1 career in dual meets, coached 38 State individual champions,
(3 – 4-time State Champions), 96 State placers and 145 State
qualifiers. Gary Mayabb has also coached soccer, diving, football
and track & field. He currently is the Strength and Conditioning
Coach and has developed an 11-month training program. Coach
Mayabb has been named Coach of the Year by Missouri Wrestling
Association, USA Wrestling and MSHSAA over 15 times.
TOM MCCANN—KEARNEY HS, KEARNEY, NE
Tom McCann has been a high school wrestling for 40 years as a head
coach - 37 at Kearney High School. Coach McCann has coached
State Champions in Colorado and Nebraska and over 268 state
qualifiers and 50 state finalists. Tom McCann has been named;
- N.F.H.S. - National Coach of the Year - 2001
- 1998 Region 6 NWCA "Coach of the Year"
- USA Magazine "Coach of the Year"
- HM Twice NSWCA "Coach of the Year"
- "Hall of Fame" Nebraska Coaches Association "Coach of the Year" - '98.
ANDY ALBRIGHT—CHANUTE HS, CHANUTE
Andy Albright has been the Middle School physical education and
social studies teacher and Chanute Middle and High School wrestling
coach since 2002. In those 7 years Coach Albright’s teams have
amassed a 73 and 28 win-loss record and he has been named the
Southeast Kansas League coach of the year 4 different times, Regional
and 4A coach of the year twice. Andy graduated from Fort
Scott High School, Labette County Community College and Pittsburg
State University. After teaching and coaching in Missouri at Nevada
High School for two years, Albright returned to Kansas to lead the
Blue Comets to a Southeast Kansas League Championship, a first
place at Regionals and a sixth place finish at State in 2009.
RYAN KARJALA—EMPORIA HS, EMPORIA
As a three-time Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, Assistant
Coach of the Year (1999, 2000 and 2008), Ryan Karjala began,
while an Emporia State University student, as an Emporia High
School assistant wrestling coach in 1994 and track & field assistant
coach in 1996. He then was hired as a Mathematics teacher
at Emporia High School in the fall of 1996 to teach all level in
the curriculum. Ryan took over as the Math Department Chair
in 2007 and also teaches Mathematic courses for Butler County
Community College, El Dorado, KS. Coach Karjala has been on
the Spartan coaching staff for 16 individual state champions,
92 state placers, 4 state runner-up, 11 consecutive Centennial
League championships and 4 state championship teams. Coach
Karjala has a USA Wrestling bronze level coaching certificate and
is serving as the KWCA secretary.
MIKE ATLEE—WICHITA-SOUTH HS, WICHITA
Coach Mike Atlee has been involved in wrestling in some capacity for
almost 30 years. As a wrestler, he competed at Wichita North High
School and was coached by Louis Valadez. In Junior College, at Labette
Community College he wrestled for the legendary Jody Thompson.
Atlee earned Academic All-American honors for the Cardinals. Atlee
stated,”Coach Valadez and Coach Thompson are probably the two
biggest influences in my life. They are probably the reason that I
am in education today.” After graduating from Newman University
with Bachelors degree in Education in 1993, Atlee started his head
coaching career at Valley Center. After 2 years, Atlee returned back
to Wichita-Heights where he had been an assistant, and was head
coach there from 1995-2000, and again in 2002-2004. In those 7
seasons, Atlee’s teams produced 5 state champions, 7 Runner-ups,
and over 20 placers. His teams finished in the Top-10 numerous times
during those 7 years. Coach Atlee began his teaching/coaching duties
at Wichita South in 2007-2008. His overall dual record is 121-54-2.
Atlee is the proud father of three children - Katie 15, Kellie12, and
Kody 10. He enjoys going to all of his kids athletic and extra-curricular
activities, and has recently taken up the game of golf.
