Onaga, KS -- It was up early and off to Eastern Kansas for the leopard wrestling team Saturday as they stepped on the scales for weigh-in at 4:45 am before getting on the bus for a three hour trip to Onaga. The early rise was worth it as the leopards were able to put all three seniors into the finals where Kevin Street (135) was the only one to bring home a title with a hard fought win over Bloomer of Onaga for the second weekend in a row. Along with Zachgo (160) and Timson's (215) runners-up was Austin Biggs who wrestled well on his way to a 4th place finish.
The JV team also competed on Saturday in the Axillary Gym in Onaga High School. Bring home medals were Kyle Budreau (112) 4th and Paul Barrientes (215) winning his second tournament in as many weekends. Not placing were Gianluca Severin and Sam Suelter. Severin was unable to get a win in his first action of the season, but gained a lot of experience to take back to Italy with him. Suelter was able to record a pin on the day as well.
"It was a very good day for us. We have kids doing things that we have been preaching for 4 years now. We are warming up and getting focused for matches better than we ever have, and that has a lot to do with the great senior leadership we have right now", said Coach Naasz following the tournament.
Next up for the Lincoln matmen will be the Beloit/Russell Duals that will take place at Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg on Thurday December 16. To finish out the first half of the season, the team will travel to Ellsworth for a round robin on Saturday December 18.
