RED CLOUD, NE - For the third season in a row the Leopards traveled north of the border into the Cornhusker State to wrestle in the Red Cloud/Blue Hill Invite. Thirteen teams, eleven from Nebraska and two from Kansas, took to the mat and Kevin Street (130) and Collin Jones (189) were both able to come home with fourth place finishes.
When asked about the day Coach Naasz said, "we love coming up here and seeing different competion and we love the way they run this tournament...it would be nice if we could run tournaments in Kansas as fast and furious as they do up here." Naasz was refereing to the fact that no breaks are taken from one round to the next and that they don't jump from the consolations side to the championship side, but instead wrestle out both sides of the bracket simultaneously. The wrestlers also had to deal with shoulder to shoulder weigh ins where all wrestlers weigh in on site one hour prior to the start of the tournament. "We have different rules here in Kansas, here we can weigh in with a school official at home and take our weigh in sheet with us, but in Nebraska everyone gets on the same scale."
Prior to the start of finals, Red Cloud head coach Dennis Riemersma was suprised by his former wrestlers to honor his fortieth year of coaching (30 in Red Cloud and 10 in Hamburg, IA). His longtime assistant and former wrestler spoke about Riemersma's commitment to the sport and the individuals he coached. The crowd from over seventeen different communities broke in to applause many times and when the presentation was complete, offered Coach Riemersma a standing ovation.
This week the Leopards will be in action on Thursday night in Bennington for a dual and will travel to Phillipsburg on Saturday for the Panther Classic which is touted as one of the premier events in Northwest Kansas.
